Once you reach Stage 7 you gain access to the Card Trader. Where as gold is primarily only used for one function at the moment and that is the Card Trader. For 50 gems you can get 1 card pack of 3 cards and for 500 gems you can get 10 card packs with 30 cards. With gems you can buy cards which is what the game is all about. Gems are the primary source of currency in Duel Links being used for most everything essential in the game.
