Now I have to adjust to using the sorcerer on the frontline, and he de-infiltrates CSMs and can't go with obliterators.
In reality however, your commander is permanently transformed into a Demon Prince - right from the start of the game (which I found out to my cost on a HG map earlier tonight)! This robs him not only of any ranged attack (including demonic fire you got from wargear) but also his detector abilities! While one can still use tainted auspex, this isn't as reliable (subject to timeout and can be destroyed, which means waiting for that timeout.) and probably enough on it's own to discourage from using the last wargear piece. The way the Demon Prince wiki article reads suggest you can "switch on" Demon Prince powers at will, which are considered an overall upgrade, despite the previously mentioned loss of the Banner of Chaos wargear fear aura. The Chaos commander needs to collect all other wargear and then can ascend to a Demon Prince.
